We started by producing initial sketches for the renovation and extension, working with Rosie and Dan to understand their needs now and wants for the future. The sketches allowed us to engage with builders and a structural engineer to get a sense of project costs. Unfortunately, costs were going to exceed the budget. So faced with the decision to go big or go home to the bungalow, Rosie and Dan decided to demolish!
Our philosophy is always to retrofit, refurbish and extend. But for Rosie and Dan the opportunity to build a new home from scratch and pay no VAT on a new build was too good and provided the most cost-effective way to remove a defective front façade.
We designed a simple contemporary home for them that tapped into their ideal forever home, and the house has surpassed their expectation while also adding significant value to their initial investment. But the cherry on the cake isn’t the financial reward, it’s that their dream home is now a family home, as we welcomed our new nephew to the family shortly after completing the project!
As for tension, there was none during the process . . . although we’re still awaiting an invite for Christmas. Watch this space.
